Woman deciding on glasses or contact lenses

WHAT IS ORTHOKERATOLOGY?

Orthokeratology or Ortho-K is a non-surgical procedure that helps people see clearly without using glasses or contact lenses. With Ortho-K you wear specially designed lenses at night while sleeping. These lenses gently change the shape of the front of your eye resulting in light rays focusing properly onto the retina.
This safe and effective technique is mainly used to correct shortsightedness (myopia), long sightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia (blurred near vision).

HOW DOES ORTHOKERATOLOGY WORK?

With Ortho-K we refocus images by changing the shape of the front surface of the eye in the same way laser eye surgery works. The back surface of the lens has a number of specialised curves that move our natural tears which reshape the front surface of your eye while you sleep. The result after waking and removing your lenses is clear, sharp vision.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

To make an Ortho-K lens we need to first map the surface of your eye, using an instrument known as a corneal topographer. At Optomeye Eyewear we use the Medmont Corneal Topographer.

After completing the map and a comprehensive eye test, we will then have all the necessary information to create a custom lens for your eye.

IS ORTHOKERATOLOGY SAFE?

Ortho-K is a safe procedure. The Ortho-K lenses we use are approved by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration). These lenses are made of materials that have high oxygen permeability that allow your eyes breath overnight while you sleep which maintains eye health. This material is different from contact lenses you would normally wear during the day.
All contact lens usage carry a small risk of eye infections. This is also true Ortho-K. The risk of infection can be great reduced by following your cleaning and lens care instructions meticulously and only wearing the Ortho-K lenses as prescribed and attending all the necessary follow up visits.

WHO IS SUITABLE?

You may be a good candidate for Ortho-K if you:

  • Have myopia
  • Have hyperopia
  • Have presbyopia
  • Have been unable to wear contact lenses
  • Have an active lifestyle and don’t want to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day

WHAT IS MYOPIA CONTROL?

The number of children who are becoming myopic has grown rapidly over the last 25 years. The Center For Disease Control in the United States has estimated that by 2020 50% of the world’s population will have myopia. The results also indicates that Ortho-K has been proven to be an effective option for controlling myopia progression. Myopia control is important because the higher the degree of myopia the greater the risk of sight threatening conditions as retinal detachment or glaucoma.
